Mr. Riaz Daud is energetic, always reaching out, gregarious, always there for friends, and iconic! An ambitious man of his convictions and never one to shy away from his instincts, Riaz Daud came to Dubai in 1976, after deciding in just his 2nd year of university that formal education was not cut out to hone his natural talent for moving with and understanding people.
Fortune favors the brave. Between 1976-85, Mr. Riaz changed jobs within different businesses in Dubai, always absorbing the flavors of Dubai, learning the ropes of working in a multicultural, vibrant and growing Dubai, polishing his natural sales and marketing skills and capabilities while rising through the ranks.
In 1985 Mr. Riaz, through continuous efforts and relentless hard-work, landed a job with Hitachi. For the next 12 years, he worked with Hitachi to grow it to new heights in the region as one of the leaders in their product lines, especially in their hardware and construction equipment segments.
All this while and to date, Riaz Daud actively developed a broad social network of friends, acquaintances and contacts. Never shy to meet new people from any walk of life and a natural extrovert, he always takes the initiative to introduce himself to new people of his own volition. A people person, he sometimes gets into trouble on account of his habit of being the first to reach out to people, but he knows that it is his strength.
When his brother invited him to join hands in their own hardware business, Mehta Hardware Trading Co LLC , in 1997, he knew that the calling to be on their own had come. He envisaged early on that the vision for Dubai would be realized, and that the construction sector was set to grow by leaps and bounds. The brothers together took MHTC to new heights, and all the time ploughed back their earnings into the Dubai real estate market, never investing a single penny anywhere else. Mr. Riaz always did, and still does, get into minor squabbles and gentle bantering with compatriots on the subject of not repatriating any of his earnings, but he considers that Dubai has given him everything and has an unremitting belief Dubai will continue to shine for years to come.
Always having a zest for life, he appreciates and enjoys the ‘fine’ things of life. Mr. Riaz has also learned Arabic in Dubai, and is proud of his ability to converse fluently in the local Emirati accent, even if he may at times struggle with words here and there. Never even thinking of moving from Dubai, his vacations outside of Dubai do not last more than a few days at a stretch – as Dubai is always calling – always an icon at heart and one ceaselessly at work for the iconic Dubai.
