The entrepreneurial journey is an immense learning curve, with lessons about building relationships, leadership, financial prudence and more.
Prem Punjabi advises the new generation of entrepreneurs to make the most of it, and use their knowledge, skills and independence to enhance the business they have inherited. However, he also cautions them about people who may not always have their best interests in mind.
Punjabi looks back with satisfaction at the journey that has taught him great resilience and the power of determination. It started in Nigeria, where he initially gathered experience by working in a company and then started his own enterprise.
However, he moved to the UAE in 2003, and is deeply appreciative of the secure environment and great quality of life that the country offers. It also offers numerous opportunities for growth and development.
And the business that he has nurtured and is now spread across the globe, is also evidence of his drive and strong will to rise above all odds. Punjabi is quick to add that the support of his family, especially his wife, has played a big role in shaping his work and life experiences.
He is also very confident about the ability of his children to take forward what has been created for them. However, he warns them to be careful about how they manage their business, because– “It is much easier to lose money than to make money”, he reflects.
He has great admiration for the work and achievements of the members of the ICONS group.“They all have great dynamism and I look forward to continuing learning from them”, says Punjabi.
His wife Geeta Punjabi, has been involved in humanitarian activities for almost two decades, raising financial aid for the underprivileged and marginalized sections of society. She is quite obviously the central force of the family, and a great source of strength in every situation, offering solace and spiritual calm.
“The parents are a great role-model to inspire the children to always stay united and provide great energy for each other”, she strongly believes.
Geeta, who has a Masters in Business Administration, and has also completed chartered accountancy, is a complete extrovert and also boasts several creative pursuits. A balance between all the elements of life, Geeta has now gained certification as a health coach as well.
The couple takes obvious pride in the progress of their daughters. Anmol, the younger one, has joined her father’s business and is also keen to extend her business acumen to the fashion industry. She shares a great admiration for her sister Nisa, who is a qualified Architect and Interior Designer and has set an example of strong-minded focus on her goals. She is planning to set up her own practice after gaining some corporate experience and understanding the rules and regulations of this specialized field. Nisa follows her parent’s values and guidance on a daily basis and she believes “all of us are great buddies”.
